Longitudinal predictors of child sexual abuse in a large community-based sample of South African youth

This study examined predictors of contact sexual abuse among children. Some of the findings include:

  • For girls, previous sexual abuse, not being in school and physical assaults in the community predicted sexual abuse.
  • Peer social support acted as a protective factor for girls against sexual abuse.

How can you relate this to practise?

Perhaps you work closely with a school social worker or you do group work with girls – then read this article to understand why promoting peer support among girls might help protect these girls against sexual abuse.
